“Corrie, is something wrong?” Lydia straightened from behind her rosebushes as Corrie came back through the gate.

“No, not at all.” Except that my foolish cousin has gotten herself involved with a creep who has trouble written all over him. “Your roses are lovely.” She cupped a delicate yellow rose in her hand.

“Trey told the gardener to put yellow roses around the patio when Baxter signed the house over to him.” Lydia shrugged. “I don’t know why—maybe they were a favorite of his current girlfriend.”

Trey was long gone, but still the yellow roses bloomed.

For an instant her heart hurt with it.

Lydia dropped a fresh-cut bloom into the basket she carried. “I had a short visit with Baxter. He asked me to talk to you about Trey.”

At least her grandfather seemed to be going through with his promise. “Did you mention that we’d already talked?”

“I decided that what Baxter didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him.”

Corrie returned her smile, the stress she’d felt over Deidre’s behavior fading. “Thanks, Lydia. I appreciate it.”

Lydia studied her face, much as Mrs. Andrews had done

earlier. “You know what you need—you need to get away for a while. Let’s drive over to Tybee Island and take my boat out.”

“I should stay, in case my grandfather wants me.”

Lydia’s lips tightened, as if she felt people catered to Baxter’s wants too much. “Just for a couple of hours. The sea air will blow the worries out of your mind.”

“I don’t know…” Surprising, how attractive it sounded to get away for a bit.

“Are you going out on the boat?” An eager voice interrupted her thoughts. “Can I come?”

Jason skipped over to them, his eyes bright. Lucas was a few steps behind his son. His gaze connected with Corrie’s, and he smiled.

“A trip on Lydia’s boat? Sounds like a great idea.”

Lydia’s smile was a bit slow in coming. “Corrie and I were just talking about it. I thought it would do her good to get away from the sickroom for a while.”

“It would do us all good.” Lucas put his hand on Jason’s shoulder. “Sorry—I guess we seem to be inviting ourselves.”

“You’re always welcome, Lucas. You know that.”

Lydia’s usual brisk tone returned as she stripped off her gardening gloves. “I’ll change and meet you at the garage in half an hour, all right?”

Corrie hadn’t actually said she was going, but the others seemed to take it for granted. And given Jason’s enthusiasm and the warmth of Lucas’s smile, she wouldn’t miss it for the world.

The drive out to Tybee Island let her see something of Savannah’s surrounding area. They took Route 80 out of town, with Lucas pointing out sites of interest as they drove. The road eventually narrowed to a two-lane highway

as they approached Tybee Island, passing Fort Pulaski before they reached the bridge.

“If you feel like climbing 178 steps, we can go to the top of the Tybee Island Light,” Lucas said, turning off the main road onto a side road that bordered a tidal creek.

“I’m not sure my legs are up to that,” she said lightly.
